How to Spot Quality Jewelry at Cruise Ports — 5 Things to Check
Knowing how to spot quality jewelry is the difference between buying a piece you will wear for decades and one that sits in a drawer. I have spent nine years helping cruise guests navigate port stores across the Caribbean, and here is what I have learned: you do not need to be a gemologist to tell good jewelry from mediocre. You just need to know what to look for.
Look at the Craftsmanship First
Before you even think about the stone, examine how the piece is put together. Turn it over. Look at the back.
A quality piece of jewelry looks finished from every angle — not just the side meant to face the world. The prongs holding a stone should be even and smooth. The clasp on a bracelet or necklace should feel solid, not flimsy. If you run your finger over the edges of a ring and feel roughness or sharp spots, that is a shortcut in finishing.
I tell guests the same thing every time: if the back of a pendant looks messy, the front is not going to age well either.
Check the Metal Stamp
Look for a tiny hallmark or stamp inside the band of a ring, on the clasp of a chain, or on the back of an earring. Gold should be stamped with its karat — 10K, 14K, 18K, or 24K. Sterling silver will say 925. Platinum pieces carry a 950 or PLAT mark.
These stamps are not just decoration. They are the manufacturer standing behind what they sold you. The recommended stores at Caribbean cruise ports carry properly hallmarked pieces from established brands, so you should never have to guess what metal you are holding.
How to Evaluate a Gemstone (Without a Loupe)
You might be surprised how much you can see with just your eyes and good lighting. Here are three things I teach guests to check:
Color. Hold the stone against a white background — a business card, a piece of paper, the inside of a jewelry box. You want the color to look even and rich, not washed out or patchy. For diamonds, less color is actually better — the whitest stones are the most valuable. For gemstones like tanzanite or alexandrite, you want deep, vivid saturation.
Clarity. Look into the stone. Can you see dark spots, cloudy areas, or lines running through it? Some inclusions are normal — they are nature’s fingerprint. But they should not distract from the beauty of the stone.
Cut. This is the one people overlook, and it is the one that matters most for sparkle. A well-cut stone reflects light back to your eye instead of leaking it out the bottom. Ask to see the piece under the store’s spotlight, then step toward the window and look at it in natural daylight. A quality stone performs in both settings.
The Weight Test
Pick up the piece. Does it feel substantial? Quality jewelry has weight to it. A hollow gold bracelet feels different from a solid one — and it wears differently over time, too. When a piece feels flimsy in your hand, that is usually your answer.
Ask Questions — Good Jewelers Love Them
I have watched this play out hundreds of times. A guest walks in, shy about asking questions, and walks out unsure about what they bought. Meanwhile, the guest at the next counter is asking about the origin of the stone, the metal weight, and how the clasp works — and they walk out confident.
The jewelers at recommended port stores are experts. They know their inventory inside and out. If you ask “tell me about this stone” and they light up with an answer, you are in the right place. A jeweler who loves what they sell is exactly who you want across the counter.
Here Is the Bottom Line
Quality jewelry does not have to be the most expensive piece in the case. It has to be well-made, properly hallmarked, and crafted from materials that last. Learn to spot those three things, and you will shop like someone who has been on a hundred cruises — even if it is your first.
One more thing: shop early in the day. If you need a ring resized or a bracelet adjusted, the jeweler needs time to do it properly. The ship will not wait, and you deserve to walk back on board with a piece that fits perfectly.
