What to Buy in Roatan
Let’s start with jewelry and watches. Diamonds International is right at the port in Isla Tropicale, and it’s home to the Crown of Light , a 90-facet diamond cut you won’t see anywhere else. It’s also a Watch & Designer store, so if a timepiece has been on your mind, this is a solid place to look. And here’s something you have to see with your own eyes: DI in Isla Tropicale has the largest tanzanite stone in the entire Caribbean . a stunning 340 carats. Even if you’re not shopping for tanzanite, walk in and take a look. If a piece needs sizing, shop early in the day so the jeweler has time before you sail.
For comfort you can take home, Cariloha is one of my favorite stops anywhere. The bamboo bedding and clothing are something special, plus the Cariloha mattress that guests talk about for months after. Bamboo sleeps cooler than cotton, and the sheets are a fraction of what you’d pay at home. Right there with it is Del Sol, with the color-changing shirts and sunglasses that kids and grandkids go wild for.
Then there’s the local side of Roatan, and this is where the island really shines. Roatan is famous for its mahogany wood carvings , bowls, boxes, and hand-carved pieces with a warmth you can’t fake. You’ll also find Honduran coffee, vanilla, and cigars that make genuinely thoughtful gifts. If you dock at the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole, the craft market there is the place for locally made art and souvenirs.
Isla Tropicale . Shop First, Beach Second
Here’s something that surprises first-time cruisers: Roatan has two cruise piers. Carnival and its sister lines pull into Isla Tropicale (formerly known as Mahogany Bay), a purpose-built port with the shops right at the pier. Other cruise lines typically dock at the Port of Roatán in Coxen Hole, just a few miles away. Both give you access to the same great shopping , it just changes how far you’ll walk or ride.
Isla Tropicale just opened a brand new pool, plus a beautiful beach and restaurants on the right-hand side as you walk off the ship. Here’s the tip I give every guest: explore Isla Tropicale from left to right. Do your shopping first while the stores are calm, then head to the beach and pool to relax. You’ll enjoy both so much more that way.
