Skip the Taxi Driver’s “Friend’s Store”

This is the oldest trick in the book. A friendly taxi driver offers to take you to “the best jewelry store in town — my cousin owns it.” The store exists only for commissions. The prices are inflated. The quality is questionable. And if something goes wrong? You are stuck dealing with someone who has no reputation to protect.

Stick to the stores on your port shopping map. Those retailers have been vetted — they stand behind their products, they are accountable, and they value your repeat business. The moment you step off the map, you lose that protection.

Beware of Street Vendors on “Must-Have” Items

A gold chain for twenty dollars? A “genuine” diamond ring for fifty? Walk away. Street vendors in port markets can be great for souvenirs — vanilla, spices, beachwear — but for anything of real value, you need four walls, a business license, and a return policy.

Do Not Shop Without a Plan
